Thomas Jefferson wrote these words in 1784: “I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just, that His justice cannot sleep forever.” The Prophet Habakkuk was trembling for his country, but he thought that God was being unjust. God was using the wicked nation of Babylon to chasten Judah, but who was going to judge Babylon? God declared Babylon’s judgment in a series of five woes given in Habakkuk 2—five woes that denounced the sins of that nation.
